Latest official details: New Ford Fiesta
11 July 2008 More official details of the eagerly-anticipated 2008 Ford Fiesta have been released with the supermini getting a super-green road tax-exempt engine. On sale in October, the new Ford Fiesta will be available as a three or five-door model with a choice of three petrol and three diesel engines. This includes the Ford Fiesta’s all-new 1.4-litre ECOnetic turbodiesel engine, which will be competing against the Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion, Skoda Fabia Greenline and Seat Ibiza Ecomotive. View the latest pictures of the Ford Fiesta Emissions of just 99/km will make the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic exempt from road tax and should ensure more than 65mpg on an average cycle. There will also be a new 1.6-litre, 119bhp petrol engine which boasts 22bhp more than the outgoing 1.6-litre Fiesta. Making up the petrol engines is a 75bhp 1.25-litre and 79bhp, 1.4-litre lump while those seeking a frugal engine have the choice of a 1.4- and 1.6-litre diesel. With weight reduced by 40kg and power increased, the 1.6-litre Fiesta should accelerate from 0-62mph (100kph) in about ten seconds and have a top speed touching 120mph. The Fiesta will be available with a staggering seven trim levels from the entry-level Studio through to the range-topping Titanium, which has been a surprise success on the Focus and Mondeo models. Ford is also fitting the Fiesta with a host of components only seen previously on the car maker’s bigger vehicles including keyless start and the EasyFuel system which prevents the driver putting the wrong fuel into the tank. View more pictures of the 2008 Ford Fiesta Safety has also been improved with the supermini getting Ford’s Intelligent Protection System while 55 per cent of the Fiesta’s body structure is made of high-strength steels. It’s anticipated the Ford Fiesta – which shares a host of components with the excellent Mazda 2 – will follow in the tyre marks of the Focus and Mondeo and be excellent driver’s cars. Prices will be announced on July 22 at the British Motor Show but we’d anticipate the Ford Fiesta ranging from £8,495 for the entry-level 1.25-litre Studio, rising to about £13,500 for the top-spec 1.6-litre Titanium diesel. The seventh generation Ford Fiesta has a lot to live up to. In 32 years of production more than 12 million Fiestas have rolled of the production line. We’re driving the 2008 Ford Fiesta on its European launch in August so don’t forget to come back for our in-depth review. |
