Jeremy Clarkson has beaten President-Elect Barack Obama to be named Heat magazine’s Weird Crush of the Year, completing a Top Gear treble.

The outspoken Top Gear host joins Richard Hammond and James May who picked up the award who won in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

Speaking to Heat, a stunned Clarkson said: “It was weird when James May won, but this is really weird.”

The award shows just how popular the 48-year-old, despite his outspoken comments, wild hair and suspect fashion sense.

In second place came the soon-to-be world’s most powerful man, Barack Obama – who beat Senator John McCain to be the next man in The White House.

But despite being a Vietnam veteran, McCain wasn’t as formidable competition as Clarkson who’s come up against South Korea, environmentalists, caravan owners, truckers and, er, Piers Morgan.

Although he is a magnet for controversy, Clarkson he remains one of the nation’s favourite broadcasters and journalists and the figurehead of Top Gear which has become one of the BBC’s biggest successes.

Third place went to GMTV’s Andrew Castle while Peep Show’s David Mitchell came fourth.

Heat editor Julian Linley told Auto Trader: "Heat readers obviously have a thing about men who know their way around an engine and, in Jeremy's case, dubious taste in denim! heatworld voters voted in their thousands, awarding the petrolhead presenter a whopping 6130 votes - 3700 more than runner up Barack Obama.

"So this wasn't a close run thing, they really do love him. We've scribbled out Richard and James' names on the Weird Crush trophy and it's awaiting Mr Clarkson's collection."
