The hottest version of Vauxhall’s Insignia will cost from £30,995 when it goes on sale this September.

It’s a £1,245 premium over the current range-topping Insignia, and puts it not far behind the £34k Audi S4 and BMW 335i Coupe SE.

The 319bhp VXR accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds before hitting an artificially limited 155mph top speed.

Its 2.8-litre V6 sends power to the tarmac through an advanced four-wheel drive chassis fitted with electronic limited slip differentials.

It has been honed over more than 10,000km of test driving at the Nurburgring Nordschleife and is fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels and Brembo brakes.

To set it apart from other Insignia models it has deeper bumpers with mesh grilles, a rear spoiler, dual exhausts, Recaro front seats, VXR steering wheel and new instrument graphics.

The Insignia VXR will also be available in Sports Tourer guise, making it the fastest Vauxhall estate car in its history.

Space increases from 540 to 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded down.

When it goes on sale it will the second-fastest VXR in the range, only behind the mad and bad VXR8 with its Corvette-derived V8 engine.
