Volvo's drink-drive lock on sale in '08
04 September 2007 The alcolock will be available to buy from late 2008, when it can be fitted on the Volvo S80, V70 and XC70 models. It works by analysing a sample of the driver's breath, which must be blown into a wireless hand-held unit before the car will start. The results are transmitted by a radio signal to the car's electronic control system. Advanced sensors mean the system will be able to detect if the driver is trying to cheat, by using an air pump, for instance. Volvo stresses that the system is only intended to help drivers make safe decisions, rather than regulate against drink-driving. The system can be bypassed in case of emergencies, either once or an unlimited number of times, depending on the setting installed by a Volvo dealer. |
