Visitors to next month's Scottish Motor Show will be the first buyers in Britain to see Volvo's new S40 saloon.

It goes on sale next spring from around £14,500, and is based on the same underpinnings as the Ford Focus C-Max MPV and next-generation Focus hatchback.

The S40 will be a showcase for new safety technology, including IDIS - Intelligent Driver Information System. This helps the driver avoid being distracted by delaying non-essential signals and information. For example, if the driver is accelerating, braking or waiting at a junction, IDIS will hold any incoming calls to the in-car phone until it is safe for the driver to answer.

Larger side airbags have also been fitted to provide more effective protection at hip and chest height. For extra safety, the S40's body has been reinforced and is now 68% stiffer than the outgoing model's.

Also making their UK debuts at the show will be the face-lifted Land Rover Freelander, Renault's all-new Megane Sport Saloon and Sport Tourer estate, and the Kia Picanto - a five-door city car which should go on sale next June from £5500.

The Scottish Motor Show, to be held at Glasgow's SECC from November 7-16, also features motorsport events and stunt driving displays. For more information or to book tickets, visit www.secctickets.com or call the ticket hotline on 0870 040 4020.
