Just when you thought the VW Scirocco couldn’t get any better Volkswagen unveil this at the Bologna Motor Show – the Scirocco Studie R.

While it’s a ‘design study’ expect the Scirocco Studie R to become the real thing in the next six-to-nine months and sit as the model’s flagship edition as the R20T.

Inspired by the Scirocco GT24 which raced at the Nürbürgring 24-hour endurance race earlier this year, the Scirocco Studie R gets a rear spoiler, an oval-shaped exhaust on each side and three large air intakes which will cool the car’s engine.

In the past VW has fitted its top models such as the Golf R32, Passat R36 and Touareg R50 with big V engines, but this isn’t the case with the Scirocco R which gets the lighter, more efficient 2-litre, 264bhp engine from the Audi TTS.

With this amount of power, channelled through VW’s brilliant six-speed semi-automatic gearbox, the Scirocco Studie R should accelerate from 0-62mph in around 5.5 seconds before hitting the 155mph electronic barrier.

To honour its Bologna debut, the Scirocco Studie R – which rolls on 19-inch three spoke alloy wheels – gets Italian-inspired red and green decals while the interior gets the same colour combination on the seams of the gearknob, floor mats, steering wheel and Recaro seats.

Bolongna isn't the only motor show happening at the moment with Essen in full flow with stunning debuts from Audi on show.

If the Studie R does go on sale next year as the R20, we’d expect a few cosmetic changes and a price-tag of around £26,000.
