Volkswagen has released details of its fastest ever Passat – the R36.

Powered by a 3.6-litre V6, the 294bhp R36 accelerates from 0-62mph (100kph) in 5.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

The estate model – VW’s fastest ever – is just 0.2 seconds slower to 62mph, but has the same top speed.

The six-speed DSG semi-automatic gearbox – which operates by moving the stick forward or back - channels power to all four wheels, which have uprated disc brakes to match the increased performance.

Other safety features on the Passat include ESP (electronic stabilisation programme) and six airbags. It received a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP test.

The interior has sculpted sports seats, an aluminium dashboard, sports steering wheel and polished pedals, all bearing the R36 logo.

The bespoke bodykit on the Passat features a trio of front airdams echoing Volkswagen’s other ‘R’ model – the Golf R32. The car will also benefit from unique 18-inch alloy wheels and twin tailpipes. The estate model will feature a discreet rear spoiler.

Prices have yet to be announced for the powerful Passat, which makes its debut at the Essen Motor Show on November 30 and will go on sale in the middle of 2007.
