Vauxhall has announced details of the car which will replace the Vectra at the British Motor Show 2008.

The new mid-sized model – dubbed Insignia – will be based on the ‘design language’ of the GTC concept car .

And Vauxhall is keen to showcase the new model’s dynamic capabilities, building on the recent successes of the storming VXR8 sports saloon and the current Vectra VXR.

“Dynamic performance is one of the Vauxhall brand’s core values”, says Alain Visser of General Motors Europe – Vauxhall’s parent company.

“In the new Insignia, this defining characteristic is realised by sophisticated powertrain technology.”

Whether this implies the carmaker is looking to introduce a four-wheel drive system into the flagship motorway mile-eater is still in question.

Reports surfaced last week over Vauxhall’s intention to introduce a range-topping Insignia VXR four-wheel-drive model to rival the Audi RS4.

Speaking to Auto Trader, a spokesperson denied the reports, but did not rule out any possible drivetrain for the future.

The GTC concept car featured a 300bhp V6 engine – based on Vauxhall’s familiar 2.8-litre turbocharged unit – with an electronically controlled four-wheel drive system.

The Insignia will build on Vauxhall’s mid-sized saloon heritage – wading into battle with the new generation Ford Mondeo.

Since 1957, the marque has sold over four million saloons, under the guises of the Victor, Cavalier and Vectra.
