Porsche will plug the gap between the Boxster roadster and the 911 sports car this autumn with the new Cayman coupe, unveiled today.

Costing £43,930, the Cayman S is a two-seater sharing much of its mechanical package with the Boxster soft-top. Its 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine is mounted behind the driver and develops a muscular 295bhp. That is enough for a claimed top speed of 171mph, and the Cayman S sprints to the benchmark 62mph in a scant 5.4sec.

When sales start in November, only the S model will be available, but Whatcar.com understands that a less powerful car - badged simply Cayman - will join the line-up at a later date.

Buyers will be able to choose between a standard six-speed manual gearbox and an optional automatic, whose Tiptronic function lets drivers flick-shift between ratios via buttons mounted on the steering wheel.

The Cayman shares many design similarities with existing Porsche sports cars the Boxster, 911 and Carrera GT, but is the company's first hatchback for a generation. Practicality is boosted by two separate boots, enough to accommodate 260 litres in the rear luggage compartment and 150 litres in the nose.

Standard equipment includes an automatic pop-up rear spoiler, a leather interior, 18-inch alloy wheels and stability control. Porsche Active Suspension Management is optional, letting drivers select normal or sports settings to adjust ride and handling characteristics.
