11 May 2004 Although the new 997 incarnation of the 911 is heavier than the current 996, it is slightly more powerful, so performance figures are identical, with the car reaching 60mph in 5.0sec and topping out at 177mph. Fuel consumption is marginally improved from 25.4mpg to 25.7mpg on the combined cycle. Two versions will be available at launch. The £58,380 Carrera 2 uses a development of the existing 3.6-litre engine to produce an extra 6bhp at 321bhp, but has the same amount of pulling power at 273lb ft. The £65,000 Carrera S uses a new 3.8-litre engine which produces 350bhp and 295lb ft of pull. It is capable of hitting 60mph in 4.8sec and has a 182mph top speed, and returns 24.6mpg. Both cars use a new six-speed manual gearbox to send power to the rear wheels, and are fitted with Porsche's stability management system as standard. An active suspension system which provides firmer settings at the flick of a switch is standard on the S and a £3000 option on the Carrera 2. A sports package with 20mm lower suspension and a limited-slip differential is optional on both cars and should cost between £750 and £1000. Next-generation Cabriolet models are set to arrive next year, followed by four-wheel-drive versions and a new Turbo in 2006. Buyers can continue to order current versions of these cars. |
