21 February 2008 Mercedes has pulled the wraps off the new C-Class Estate, which will hit UK showrooms on March 1. With a maximum boot capacity of 1,500-litres it beats the Mercedes C-Class saloon hands down for practicality. And there is even a storming AMG version on its way. View more pictures of the Mercedes C-Class Estate It is even claimed the Mercedes C-Class Estate was sent on ‘virtual shopping trips’ before it was built – as part of its development its computer model was filled with thousands of simulated shopping goods. It shares five common petrol engines with the saloon range, being available with two 1.8-litre supercharged engines and three V6 engines ranging from 2.5 to 3.5-litres. Power ranges from 156bhp and 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 9.8 seconds, up to 272bhp in the range-topping V6 and 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and top speed of 155mph. Economy for the 156bhp petrol averages 39.8mpg, while the thirstiest 272bhp V6 achieves 28.5mpg. Buyers in search of economy should look at the C200 CDI, with its 2.1-litre, 136bhp engine – capable of 47.1mpg. There is also a 170bhp version of the same engine and a 3-litre V6 diesel with 224bhp. Also appearing on the price list is a hot AMG version, with the saloon’s 6.2-litre 451bhp monster engine. Inside, Mercedes C-Class Estate owners’ can expect Bluetooth, as it is now standard across the range. The extra space inside the Estate has also allowed engineers to enhance its seats, making them more comfortable for long journeys. Safety has been improved over the C-Class Estate, to account for its different body shape and Mercedes will be hoping for the same 5-star Euro NCAP score achieved by the saloon. Prices will start at £24,630 for the 1.8-litre petrol SE, rising to £33,265 for the 3-litre V6 diesel Elegance. The 6.2-litre AMG will be available for £52,570. The Mercedes C-Class estate is available to order now, with the first cars delivered on March 1. Yesterday Audi announced its rival to the C-Class, the Audi A4 Avant - read our story here. |
