Britain has a new world champion after Andy Priaulx won the FIA World Touring Car title for the second time yesterday.

The Guernsey-based driver's battle for the championship went down to the final two rounds in the Chinese island of Macau after a close fought season.

Priaulx, who drives a BMW 320si for BMW Team UK, started the race one point behind Brazilian driver, Augusto Farfus.

After an impressive fifth place in the first race of the day, Farfus crashed out of the second, ending his year-long campaign.

This left the door open for Prialux, who after winning the first race, had breathing space to keep himself out of trouble for the rest of the day.

The Guernseyman finished fifth in the second race, which was enough to secure Priaulx the title.

This victory is Priaulx third successive touring car title. He won the 2004 European Touring Car Championship and back-to-back World championships in 2005 and 2006.
