World debut for fastest Audi R8 ever
12 January 2009
The fastest ever production Audi has been showcased for the first time at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show.
The new Audi R8 V10 is fitted with a detuned version of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4’s V10 engine, developing 525bhp and 390lb/ft of pulling power.
This added oomph makes it 111bhp more powerful than the V8 R8 enabling a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 196mph – compared to the V8’s 4.6 seconds and 187mph.
Displayed at Detroit in a striking red, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI will cost from £97,957 when it goes on sale towards the middle of the year.
The sub-£100,000 price-tag compares favourably with rivals such as the aforementioned Ferrari F430 and Gallardo LP560-4 which cost £38,000 and £47,000 more respectively.
Despite the economic downturn, 2008 proved to be a stellar year for Audi as the German car maker passed one million sales for the first time.
