Geneva 2009 debut: The return of Lagonda
04 March 2009
Luxury British car makers are dominating the Geneva Motor Show with Lagonda the latest up-market marque to debut a new car.
Revived after a 15 year hiatus, Aston Martin-owned Lagonda is showing off its ‘Concept’, a luxury four-door SUV-like sports coupe.
Bearing a huge grille, chunky rear and 22-inch alloy wheels, the commanding Lagonda Concept is a big step away from the more beautiful look of the DB9 and Vantage models built by Aston Martin.
The Concept is a fruition of work between Aston Martin and Mercedes with the Lagonda getting the engine and platform from the Mercedes GL.
Aston says the platform is tailored to accommodate a broad range of future powertrains, including low emission diesel, hybrid or – like the Bentley Continental Supersports – flexifuel.
While only a concept, if it goes into production it will be finding itself in the ultra-niche super-luxury SUV market – occupied by the Spyker D8 Peking-to-Paris.
Lagonda is just one of a large selection of British car makers making waves at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – despite the economic slump.
Aston Martin has really gone for it in Switzerland, showing off its most driver focussed car yet in the V12 Vantage and its fastest ever convertible with the DBS Volante.
The Gaydon company is also showcasing its One-77 hypercar – the marque’s ultimate car which will cost around £1 million when it goes on sale in the next year-or-so.
Just north of Aston Martin and not to be outdone was Crewe-based Bentley showing off its fastest ever car, the Continental Supersports – a biofuel-based version of the footballers’ favourite which will hit 204mph.
Rolls-Royce has used Geneva to downsize – sort of – by unveiling its 200EX which is a BMW 7 Series-sized junior Phantom – and that will go on sale as the RR4 next year.
Lotus was also displaying its full range including its Evora and a new Omnivore flexifuel engine.
