Mitsubishi has given the clearest indication yet as to the look of its all-new Lancer Evolution performance saloon.

Debuting at the Detroit Motor Show, the Prototype X Concept, marks the biggest development yet for the hot Lancer.

Although final figures are still to be announced, the engine powering the Prototype X – and the next Lancer Evolution – will be the most powerful yet, suggesting a 0-60mph time of around four seconds.

The show car is equipped with a semi-automatic gearbox, which will be available on the production model, although a conventional manual 'box will also be offered.

Despite being based on the new Lancer – and sharing its distinctive gaping grille - the Prototype X features a bespoke front and rear bumpers, rear wing, bonnet air scoop and 20-inch alloy wheels with massive brakes.

Inside, the front bucket seats are upholstered in suede-like alcantara and an electronic lap counter will please those who enjoy trackdays.

The new Evolution – which will be called Lancer Evolution X – is likely to be launched at the end of the year.
