Mini has announced its legendary Cooper will be powered by a diesel engine for the first time.

The Mini Cooper D has an average fuel economy of 64.2mpg –  around 25mpg more than the equivalent petrol model.

Its 1.6-litre turbodiesel produces 110bhp and 177lb/ft of pulling power, enabling the Cooper to accelerate from 0-62mph (100kph) in 9.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 121mph - 1mph more than the 1.6 petrol model.

Low carbon dioxide emissions of just 118g/km put the Mini in Band B meaning tax is just £50 per year.

Mini has also released details of its new Mini One.

The 1.4-litre petrol engine produces 95bhp and 103lb/ft pulling power enabling a top speed of 115mph.

The Minis – which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March – will go on sale in April, with the One and Cooper D costing £11,595 and £14,190 respectively.
