Mercedes-Benz's plan to build a motoring heritage centre at the famous Brooklands racing circuit in Surrey has been given the green light.

The Government has confirmed that the proposal will not be subject to a public inquiry, following the granting of outline permission by Elmbridge Borough Council.

While the centre will focus on the history of Mercedes, visitors will also be able to test-drive the manufacturer's full range of cars on a purpose-built track, off-road circuit and wet-handling area.

Customers will be able to place an order for a new car at the site and collect it from the historic circuit once it is ready.

The new building, next to the Brooklands Museum and racing circuit, will house galleries and a technology centre. The plans also include a business development, a four-star hotel and a 60-acre country park with riverside walks.

Detailed plans will now be drawn up by Mercedes for final approval by the local council within the next four to five weeks. Construction is scheduled to start next year, with the site opening to the public in late 2005 or early 2006.
