21 September 2004 The Caravan Club awards saw trophies presented to winning cars ranging in cost from £11,915 to £53,750, and spanning 10 classes from budget cars to 4x4s. The panel of expert judges, including What Car?'s group editor Steve Fowler, gave the overall laurels to the Mazda 6 2.0 D TS2 wagon. All 51 entrants were tested over four gruelling days for their caravanability', with points on offer not only for ability to tow but also for things like load space and access to electrical sockets. Judges were impressed by the Mazda's quiet and refined 134bhp diesel engine, which they said provided plenty of pulling power low down in the rev range for towing. The 6's flexibility and composure when towing also boosted its overall score. Citroen's Berlingo Multispace came top in the budget category, the Toyota Corolla D-4D T3 won the small family car class and the Vauxhall Vectra 3.0 CDTi Elite auto came first in the family car section. Mazda's overall winner was also judged the best estate, while the BMW 525d SE Touring was number one in the executive and luxury car segment. Isuzu's Rodeo Denver pick-up beat challengers in the utility category, while the Seat Altea 2.0 TDi Sport was the favourite compact MPV and the Subaru Forester 2.0 XT the best small 4x4. The Renault Grand Espace 3.0 dCi Initiale won the full-size people carrier category, and the Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDi was the top large off-roader.
