Five Lamborghini Murcielagos crashed
23 April 2009
A staggering five Lamborghini Murcielagos have been involved in crashes in less than a month.
That’s a total of 3,200bhp and £1 million of metal – all on its way to the supercar scrapheap.
One happened in Moscow, where a Murcielago, driven by a 22-year-old was obliterated and caused three other cars to be written off, including a Ford Mondeo which caught fire after a tyre from the Lamborghini hit its fuel tank.
It’s been reported the driver of the Moscow Murcie had a 16-year-old passenger who suffered non-life threatening injuries after hitting his head on the steering wheel.
Two yellow Murcielagos were involved in separate collisions in Ukraine and Russia while a black Lambo is now in a scrapyard in Poland.
The fifth crash involving a Murcielago occurred in Seattle, USA, where a light-coloured model rear-ended a Hyundai Santa Fe. Nobody was injured.
American website Wrecked Exotics has details of 75 Murcielago crashes since the 640bhp supercar was launched in 2002 – meaning on average one of the Italian cars is involved in an incident every five weeks.
That would be pretty normal for a mass-produced car but it’s thought around 3,000 Murcielagos have rolled of the Sant’Agata production line.
The Murcielago is a stunning handling machine, lapping the Top Gear track in just 1 minute 19.8 seconds. But as with any car, a combination of driver error, dodgy roads or sheer bad luck can result in an accident.
