Clean, mean diesels for Honda
15 August 2003 At a £1000 premium over 2.0-litre petrol models, the new oil-burners will cost from £17,500 in saloon form or £18,500 for a Tourer estate. The new cars comply with strict Euro IV emissions regulations, and so escape the usual 3% penalty for diesel. This, in addition to low carbon dioxide emissions of 143g/km for the saloon and 153g/km for the estate, places the Accord diesels squarely in the lowest 15% tax band, four bands lower than the petrol. This is three groups lower than the £17,415 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 TDi PD SE, and a higher-rate earner will therefore pay £200 less per year if they choose the Honda, with a tax bill of £1042. At 52mpg, the combined fuel consumption is also 3mpg better than the VW. The new engine delivers 138bhp and an impressive 251lb ft of pulling power. The dash to 60mph takes 9.4 seconds, half a second quicker than the VW, although top speed is just 1mph faster at 130mph. |
