Ford Fiesta ECOnetic – UK’s most popular green car?
|
23 July 2008 The ultra-economical Ford Fiesta ECOnetic was unveiled at the British International Motor Show yesterday. Going on sale in October with the rest of the Ford Fiesta range, the Fiesta ECOnetic will be the most economical Ford on sale. In fact the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic carbon dioxide emissions of just 98g/km will make its Britain’s lowest emitting mass production diesel car. View more pictures of the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic And more noticeable for its drivers will be its stonking average fuel consumption of 76.3mpg. It’s powered by a specially tuned version of Ford’s 1.6-litre diesel engine which produces 89bhp. To make the ECOnetic so economical and keep its emissions low it features mechanical changes unique to the model. Longer gear ratios get the car up to speed with less work from the engine and a diesel particulate filter reduces emissions. Lower suspension from the sporty Zetec S model keeps the Fiesta closer to the ground, making it more aerodynamic. Wheel hub caps specially designed to improve airflow along the sides of the car make it slip through the air more easily at high speeds, and energy efficient tyres, designed to have a low rolling resistance. To encourage the driver to play to all its strengths, a green indicator light signals the most economical time to change gear. As with all new Ford Fiesta models, it should also be light, weighing around 40kgs less than the previous generation – with benefits for performance and economy. The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic will be available for £11,845 in 3-door guise and £12,445 for the more family-friendly 5-door.
