Ford has revealed this new 4x4 - dubbed Kuga - which will go on sale in Britain in spring next year.

The Kuga is billed as a ‘crossover’ vehicle with equally strong off-road and on-road capabilities.

Ford previously had a model with a similar-sounding name on its roster. The Cougar, a sporty executive model based on the Mondeo platform was an entirely different car to the new Kuga.

Ford of Europe’s executive design director Martin Smith described the car as, “adventurous and distinctive".

He said it would provide a sportier alternative to ordinary 4x4s in the same way the S-MAX had for MPVs.

A preview of the car will be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Kuga is based on the Iosis X concept from last year’s Paris Motor Show.

It will be built at Ford’s plant in Saarlouis, Germany, from the beginning of 2008.
