The Fiat 500 has been given its most powerful and fuel-efficient engine yet – the 1.3-litre diesel MultiJet 2.

This gives the dinky supermini 95bhp and a new top speed of 112mph, up from 103mph.

It can also go from 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds – almost two seconds faster than the outgoing diesel engine.

Average fuel consumption has been improved from 67.3mpg to 72.4mpg and CO2 emissions are down from 110g/km to 104g/km.

The Fiat 500 MultiJet includes start/stop technology as standard and Fiat claims it will become “the most powerful diesel unit available in its segment.”

Fiat’s new 500 MultiJet is available now from £11,700 – a premium of £1,000 over the standard petrol variant.
