The Ferrari Daytona: cool

21 May 2009

by Adrian Hearn

We’re used to having cars previously owned by celebrities but this 1973 Ferrari Daytona takes the biscuit.

The classic Fezza was owned by Lady Hesketh, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and was also part of the Al Fayed’s car collection.

Lady Hesketh, part of the Hesketh Racing setup was the first of eight owners of the Daytona.

Then in 1979, Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters became the third owner of the Daytona selling the car in the 1980s for £35,000 with the fourth owner getting one of the bargains of the decade.

Celebrity-owned Ferrari Daytona: £154,990

They then sold the Ferrari in 1990 to its fifth owner for a staggering £350,000 – a ten fold profit with the car later joining the Al Fayed’s car collection where it remained for many years.

This particular model is for sale with Simon Furlonger Specialist Sportscars and has covered just 42,000 miles in its 36 year history. It’s yours for £154,990.

Auto Trader also has a 1973 Daytona with just 38,500 miles on the clock and four previous owners. You can get your hands on this through Nick Cartwright Specialist Cars for £165,995.

Ferrari Daytona: £165,995

Officially named the Ferrari 365/4, the Daytona was built between 1968 and 1973 and gained its nickname after Ferrari achieved a 1-2-3 at the 1967 Daytona 24 hour race.

When it went on sale 41 years ago, the Daytona was the most expensive Ferrari ever at a cost of £10,000. On today’s Ferrari GT, the 599, you’ll pay £11,495 for a set of ceramic disc brakes. That’s inflation for you.

Styled by Pininfarina and with a 4.4-litre V12 engine developing 352bhp, the Daytona was a hell of a car in its day with many regarding it as one of Ferrari’s finest GTs.

And it was quick; world’s fastest car quick. The Daytona could accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 175mph in 1968.

It held the top speed world record until 1970 when the Lamborghini Miura hit 179mph.

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Daytona recently appeared in an episode of Top Gear.

Richard Hammond raced James May along the French Riviera with May driving a powerboat. Hammond got pulled over by the police, May won.
