A classic Ferrari has set a world record for an auction sale when it sold for a remarkable £8 million last night.

The 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa fetched the whopping amount at the third annual Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event in Maranello, Italy.

The Testa Rossa, which is Italian for red head, was one of just 22 examples ever built between 1957 and 1958.

On the subject of red heads, the Testa Rossa's total beat the previous record paid by DJ Chris Evans for James Coburn's old Ferrari 250 last year.

A legendary racing vehicle, the Ferrari picked up ten victories in just 19 races courtesy of a 3-litre V12 engine developing 300bhp.

Max Girado, managing director of auction organiser RM Europe, said: “The eyes of the world were watching today’s sale as cars of this quality are so rarely offered to the market.

“The quality and the provenance of the Testa Rossa speaks for itself and the price we achieved today is testament to that.”
