The fresh new Citroen C5 is now available as a load lugging estate.

The Citroen C5 Tourer is France’s competitor to the Ford Mondeo and Mazda 6 estates.

The Citroen C5 Tourer’s 505-litre boot adds an extra 66-litres over the saloon, and allows easier access to the storage space. Fold the rear seats flat and that increases to a cavernous 1,500-litres.

Pressing a button at the rear of cars fitted with Citroen’s Hydractive suspension lowers the rear of the estate to make loading less of a strain.

C5s fitted with Citroen’s Hydractive suspension allow drivers to choose between five ride height levels, and a Sport setting which firms up the handling slightly.

The tailgate can also be operated remotely using the key fob, opening and closing thanks to an electric motor – but this is an optional extra.

The C5 Tourer is available with the same engines as the saloon – two petrols with 127bhp or 143bhp and four diesels ranging from 110bhp to 208bhp.

All diesel engines are fitted with a particulate filter and can run on up to 30 per cent biodiesel without modification.

The range is available with three trim levels – SX, VTR+ and Exclusive.

Cruise control, air conditioning, roof bars, acoustic windscreen and adaptive front lighting are fitted as standard.

The saloon achieved a five-star score in Euro NCAP crash testing, but the estate is yet to be tested. Up to nine airbags are fitted, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and electronic stability programme help to prevent skids.

The Citroen C5 Tourer is on sale now with prices ranging from £16,695 to £25,495.
