BMW has pulled the wraps off its most advanced sportscar ever – the shape-shifting BMW GINA Light Visionary Model.

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model is a design study to showcase what the German carmaker sees as the future of car production.

And the BMW GINA Light Visionary Model uses a shape-shifting structure made of space-age materials – the exterior is made from fabric which is stretched over a moveable aluminium space-frame body.

As an example, when the driver turns the headlights on, the metal body moves the fabric to reveal the headlights – like a human opening their eyes.

BMW has not released specific details on the engine powering the GINA concept, but hinted at an “eight cylinder combustion engine” driving the rear wheels – wheels which measure 20-inch in size.

And BMW is eager to build on its claim as the ‘ultimate driving machine’ – the driver has the opportunity to change the shape of the car’s exterior for ‘particularly dynamic motoring.’

When the BMW GINA reaches a certain speed, the rear of the car changes its structure and lifts the rear spoiler automatically for extra downforce – giving the GINA concept more stability at high speeds.

The famous BMW ‘kidney’ style grille can be opened or closed – at the touch of a button – to provide more cool air to the engine.

And this moveable structure continues inside – when the driver enters the BMW GINA and sits down, the steering wheel, headrest and instrument panel all move towards the driver to a set position.

BMW say the GINA Light Visionary Model is not a concept in the traditional sense – the GINA will not see production.

However, elements of the GINA’s design and production techniques – the ‘philosophy’ behind it – will find their way into the next generation of BMWs.
