Wraps off 3 Series Touring
22 April 2005
The new BMW 3 Series Touring, which goes on sale in the UK this September, has broken cover.
The 163bhp 2.0-litre diesel and 215bhp 2.5-litre petrol engine will be available from launch. Later in the autumn, 150bhp 2.0-litre petrol, 258bhp 3.0-litre petrol and 228bhp 3.0-litre diesel engines will be added. BMW has released performance figures only for the two initial engines.
Likely to be priced £1000 above the saloon, the entry-level petrol version should cost about £22,000 and the cheapest diesel around £24,000.
The new estate has more space than the model it replaces. With the seats in place the luggage capacity is 460 litres, which is 25 litres more than before. With the seats down it can now take an extra 40 litres at 1385 litres. A Mercedes C-Class is fractionally roomier with the seats in place, while the Jaguar X-type beats the BMW with them folded.
Like the previous car, the new Touring features a split tailgate so that smaller items can be dropped into the boot by opening the rear windscreen. There is also a secure under-floor stowage area and a fold-away, watertight box.
Specifications will mirror the saloon's, so all cars will have six airbags, remote central locking, an alarm, air-conditioning, front and rear electric windows and a CD player.
