Video: Boris Johnson’s miraculous escape
26 May 2009
Boris Johnson has escaped serious injury while out cycling after avoiding being wiped out by a lorry, with the whole incident caught on CCTV.
The super-lucky Mayor of London was riding his bike down a road in East London when the rear doors of a passing truck swung open.
One of the doors smashed into a parked car, dragging it down the centre of the road with the other door missing a group of cyclists, including Johnson, by a fraction of feet.
Miraculously, no one was hurt.
Johnson isn’t initially visible but then the suited-up Mayor sporting his unmistakeable blond bouffant appears, clutching his helmet to survey the scene.
After the Mayor’s near-miss, he said: "I am relieved that no one was hurt, but this incident reinforces the need for us to make London's roads safer for cyclists, which I am determined to do and to make London the best city for cyclists in Europe."
Bike fan Johnson, 44, was riding through Limehouse looking for routes for his cycling ‘Super Highways’ when the incident took place.
The Super Highways is a programme set up by the Mayor of London to create 12 cycle routes to link outer London to the centre.
