It’s the middle of the summer and two £1 million+ supercars are announced and a particular Portuguese footballer decides it’s time to splash the cash.

What does a multi-millionaire footballer do when he’s injured? He buys stuff.

For the six weeks-or-so Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t on the back pages, the Man United star was in the tabloid showbiz sections and, more importantly, on the Auto Trader homepage.

At the beginning of the month Ronaldo splashed out £350,000 on a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, one of the world’s most luxurious convertibles.

Then a couple of weeks later he forked out a further £150,000 on the registration plate CR7, not for his Phantom but his daily runaround – his Bentley Continental GTC.

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport announced
The previously mentioned Phantom Drophead Coupe was the world’s most luxurious convertible until Bugatti announced its Veyron Grand Sport.

At a cool £1.2 million, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport has the standard 1,001bhp 8-litre engine which gives it a 0-62mph time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 250mph – slightly less than the standard Veyron.

Just 150 will be made.

New Volkswagen Golf announced

While based on the current Golf’s platform, the sixth generation VW Golf has got a few new gadgets but most importantly a facelift, adopting the stunning Scirocco’s front.

Available as both a three-door and five-door, the Golf gets a completely new door and window seal design to help improve acoustics and keep road and engine noise to a minimum – making it the quietest Golf ever.

And it gets VW’s Adaptive Chassis Control which allows the driver to choose how stiff they want the car’s suspension to feel.

The ultimate Aston Martin announced

British car maker Aston Martin has always made beautiful cars, but they have stayed away from ultra-exclusive £1 million market – until now.

The Aston Martin One-77 is the car maker’s most adventurous model ever and will feature a 7.3-litre V12 engine developing 730bhp.

When it goes on sale at the end of next year, the Aston Martin One-77 is expected to cost in excess of £1.2 million.

And as the name suggests, just 77 will be built.

Pininfarina builds wild Rolls-Royce

Tuning house Pininfarina, which is most famous for its work on Italian supercars built a one-off Rolls-Royce ‘Hyperion’, based on the Phantom Drophead Coupe.

Pininfarina’s choice of the ‘Hyperion’ name pays tribute to a mythological Greek titan – fitting giving the cars enormous stature and the muscle under its bonnet.

The ‘Hyperion’ Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe is expected to cost more than £1m.
