The legendary DeLorean could return, according to reports from the USA.

The Eighties icon’s name – made famous as the time-travelling car in the Back to the Future trilogy – is owned by a Texan company who plan to remake the motor as a kit car.

The DeLorean was the brainchild of entrepreneur John DeLorean and was built near Belfast between 1981 and 1983.

Around 9,000 off the gullwinged sports cars rolled Northern Ireland production line, of which 6,000 are still in existence.

However, it was never the success everyone wanted it to be.

The DeLorean dream was destroyed when the owner was found to be involved in corruption and an alleged cocaine smuggling plot – something he was later cleared of.

But the legend of the motor continues to live strong thanks to its role in Steven Spielberg’s cult sci-fi adventure flick.

Reports suggest the DeLorean’s production will begin in Spring next year.
