Nearly nine in ten drivers admit to singing behind the wheel – but 58 per cent confessed to warbling out of tune

Fancy yourself as the next Leona Lewis? Or do you belong in the X-Factor hall of shame?

Nearly nine in ten drivers admit to singing behind the wheel of their car – but 58 per cent confessed to warbling out of tune.

Vauxhall Motors commissioned acoustic specialist Stuart Colam to test singing conditions in cars and found the inside of a car was a good place for budding singers.

The survey also found more than two in five drivers refused to burst into song if any passengers were present.

According to the results, larger vehicles are said to be good for male voices, while the heat and air-conditioning in the car should be kept to a minimum – to prevent throats going dry.

“The variety of absorbent and reflective surfaces enables songsters to sing with confidence” Stuart said.

Stuart’s top tips for sonorous in-car singing are to close all the windows, ensure the seat is kept in the upright position and to direct voices towards the dashboard and windscreen.

“Together with a confined space [singers] can truly hear intonation imperfections often masked in other favourite singing haunts such as the shower”, Stuart added.

Do you have a favourite song to sing when you’re driving?
