Details of a blistering Volkswagen Touareg R50 have been leaked on to the internet ahead of its official launch.

The Touareg R50 will use a tuned version of the existing 5-litre V10 diesel engine, producing around 350bhp and 600lb/ft of pulling power – making it one of the most powerful production diesel engines ever.

This should accelerate the Touareg from 0-62mph (100kph) in sub-seven seconds before running on to a top speed of 150mph.

The R50 will also boast bigger alloys, an uprated suspension and sporty bodykit, designed by Individual.

The Volkswagen Touareg made history last year when a standard 5-litre V10 towed a Boeing 747.

Volkswagen has confirmed the Touareg R50 will go into production, with the off-roader going on sale around February 2008.

It will be the third Volkswagen to carry an ‘R’ badge, following the Golf R32 and, most recently, the Passat R36, which was unveiled at last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Volkswagen Touareg R50 will be officially unveiled to the world at the Australian Motor Show in Sydney, which kicks off on October 11.

Prices haven’t been revealed, but don’t expect to get much change from £60,000.
