Cult 1980s TV show Knight Rider is to be re-launched after a 20 year gap, according to reports today.

But sadly for fans of the original series, David “The Hoff” Hasselhoff, 55, has not been confirmed for the starring role.

US television channel NBC is planning to make a two-hour-long pilot to see how well the 2008 version is received. If it is a success a full TV series could be on the air in around a year’s time.

The Hoff rose to fame playing all-round good guy, Michael Knight in the infamous Knight Rider series which was shown on ITV between 1982 and 1986.

KITT - his intelligent black steed - will be centre stage once again, albeit with a much more futuristic look and feel.

According to today’s Sun newspaper, TV Producers have consulted major car firms to create a cutting edge new vehicle.

Their source said; “Special effects have moved on so much these days it’s the perfect time to bring the show back.

“KITT will obviously be massively updated as the kind of stunts it used to perform in the old days just wouldn’t cut it today.

“Back then one of KITT’s best tricks was Turbo Boost – these days audiences will probably be expecting it to fly.”

Special effects, including speculation of morphing of vehicles seen in the Transformers movie, will bring an added dimension to the return of the classic show.

Variety reports that the pilot show will be directed by Doug Liman, of Mr and Mrs Smith and Swingers fame.
