Cars will be sold with health warnings similar to those found on a packet of cigarettes, if the latest European Union proposals get the go-ahead next month.

UK Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies has proposed a warning system that highlights cars' fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions.

Under the proposal, car makers would be obliged to carry the warnings on any adverts promoting their products.

He also wants an immediate ban on advertising that highlights a car's capability to exceed national speed limits and to limit all cars except emergency and military vehicles to 101mph by 2011.

His proposals will be debated by European Parliament next month and, if agreed, would be introduced over the next five years.
