Porsche is to build a hybrid version of the popular Cayenne 4x4.

The German car maker has teamed up with Volkswagen and Audi to develop an electric motor capable of powering the off-roader at speeds of up to 70mph.

Above this speed the SUV – which should arrive on the roads by 2010 – will use its conventional 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine.

The new model will also be exempt from London’s Congestion Charge.

The Cayenne has been widely criticised by environmentalists for being a gas-guzzling 4x4 with high carbon emissions, but Porsche claim the Cayenne’s hybrid engine will improve fuel efficiency by a third.

It may also be used in the forthcoming four-door Panamera coupe, but won’t feature in the sportier Cayman, Boxster or 911 ranges.

Porsche have also released footage of its awesome new 911 GT2.

We revealed earlier this month the GT2 would be the most powerful road-legal 911 ever with a top speed of 204mph.
