Volkswagen has released more details of its new compact 4x4, the Tiguan, which will go on sale in Britain in early 2008.

The Land Rover Freelander rival will be available in three trims. The Trend & Fun and Sport & Style versions will have a different front end to the Track & Field model, which is designed for more extreme off-road use.

There will be five engine options. Turbocharged four-cylinder TSI petrol variants will offer 147bhp, 167bhp and 197bhp, and there will be 138bhp and 167bhp 2.0-litre diesel units.

Features include a standard touch-screen stereo and satellite-navigation system, which is linked to a rear-view parking camera. The Tiguan also has a park-assist system that guides the car automatically into a parking space - the first to be installed in a 4x4.

Track & Field buyers will have an off-road mode to improve handling on rough terrain.

Latest images of the inside of the car show that it closely resembles the Tiguan concept car displayed by VW earlier this year in Los Angeles, with a Golf Plus-derived dashboard.

The Tiguan will undergo final durability testing in Namibia this month before it goes on sale early next year. The new car will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Show in September. Prices are expected to start at about £20,000.
