A vintage Ferrari has fetched nearly £5 million in a record-breaking auction.

The 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa went under the hammer for £4.6 million at an auction in Italy

The 330 was the only 4-litre model Ferrari ever built and was the last front-engined car to win Le Mans when it was driven by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien in 1962.

More than £24 million was spent at the Italian auction, where 33 factory certified road and racing Ferraris were on offer.

A 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione received a top bid of £2.85 million while Felipe Massa’s first Grand Prix winning car changed hands for just over the million pound mark.

And a steering wheel used by Formula One legend Michael Schumacher went for a staggering £43,000.

Only one of the 33 Ferraris wasn’t sold with the average car changing hands for over £500,000.

The big sellers:

1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa - £4.6 million

1953 Ferrari 340/375 M Berlinetta Competizione - £2.85 million

1970 Ferrari 512 S Sports Car - £1.7 million

1966 Ferrari Dino 206 SP - £1.6 million

1953 Ferrari 340 MM Competition Spyder – £1.56 million
