Porsche-beating Volkswagen Golf

Porsche-beating Volkswagen Golf - News image

Engineers have created the ultimate pocket rocket - a classic Volkswagen Golf with more power than a Porsche 911.

The Mk1 Golf – which has been converted to rear wheel drive – now produces 350bhp, making it one of the fastest hot hatches on the road.

Its 1,300cc engine, taken from a 190mph Suzuki Hayabusa, has been turbocharged by HR Engineering in Essex.

The Haybusa is the world’s fastest motorbike and the engine is a popular choice for converting into a car.

In the past, the Saffron Walden-based boffins have built a 350bhp Lotus Elise and a crazy 450bhp Lotus Seven style two seater.

The Golf will be making its official debut next month at the annual Volkswagen extravaganza GTi International, but if you want a sneak preview of its performance, watch the video below.
