Merc gives SLR more muscle

The SLR McLaren 722 Edition has an uprated version of the SLR’s 5.4-litre V8 that pumps out 641bhp – an increase of 24bhp. The added power helps slingshot the 722 from rest to 62mph in 3.6sec, 0.2sec faster than a standard version, and on to a new top speed of 209.4mph, up from 207.5mph. Helping the 722 cut through the air so quickly are revised aerodynamics, with a modified front splitter and rear diffuser for improved high-speed stability. The chassis has also been tweaked, with stiffer suspension and a 10mm drop in ride height. The carbon front brake discs have also been increased in diameter from 370 to 390mm, while black alloys replace the regular silver items. The cabin gets clear-lacquered carbonfibre on the dash, leather and Alcantara-covered bucket seats and a steering wheel covered in what Mercedes claims is a grippier type of leather. Firm prices are yet to be announced, but Mercedes says the 722 Edition should cost less than £340,000. The standard SLR costs £317,610. The 722 Edition is named after Stirling Moss's Mille-Miglia winning SLR of 1955 which was numbered 722 after its start time of 7.22am. | ||
