BMW 1-series gets new engine

BMW 1-series gets new engine - News image

02 December 2004

BMW has launched a new 2.0-litre engine in its 1-series hatchback range.

The 129bhp 118i is priced from £17,180 in standard trim and therefore costs £1490 more than the entry-level 116i but £1140 less than the 120i.

The car sprints to 60mph in 9.4sec, has a top speed of 129mph and returns 38.7mpg on the combined cycle. Emissions give the car a place in the 21% company car tax band, the same rating as the 120i and one better than the 116i.

The Audi A3 2.0 FSi Sportback, its rival, provides slightly better performance in every respect but costs £17,820, £640 more than the 1-series. The 148bhp A3 hits 60mph in 9.1sec, goes on to a maximum 132mph and has a combined fuel economy of 42.3mpg.

A Volkswagen Golf using the same 2.0-litre engine as the Audi is a little quicker to 60mph, with a sprint time of 8.9sec, but is £365 more expensive. Its top speed is 128mph and it returns 38.2mpg.

The A3 has the lowest emissions of all three and is consequently the cheapest for company car tax. A higher-rate taxpayer will have a monthly bill of £112 for the Audi, compared with £119 for the 1-series and £126 for the Golf.

Specifications for the new 118i match the rest of the range. The standard model comes fitted with six airbags, a CD player, air-conditioning, remote central locking, traction control and electric front windows.

The SE model costs an extra £1950 and includes alloy wheels, parking sensors, climate control and foglights. The Sport model has the same £1950 premium over standard cars and includes stiffer suspension, sharper steering and sports seats.
