Stunning Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
|
30 September 2008 To celebrate the launch of an all-new Lambo, Vijay Pattni looks at the sensational limited edition Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. Most people probably wouldn’t complain about a Ferrari – but Ferrucio Lamborghini wasn’t ‘most people’. The Italian engineer – who started out building tractors – felt his Ferrari could do with a better clutch and took it back to the father of Ferrari, Enzo – who batted him away and said: “What you gonna do?” Ferrucio was furious. He stormed off and sat down to work on his own designs for a supercar – one that would take the smile off Enzo’s face and replace it with a big tyremark. And today the battle between the Italian stallions rages on – and one of the newest recruits to fight Lamborghini’s cause is the Lamborghini Gallardo. View images of the Lamborghini Gallardo The Gallardo was launched in 2003 as a direct competitor to the Ferrari 360, and is the Lamborghini Murcielago’s baby brother – but there is nothing ‘baby’ about its performance. Straight out of the box the standard Gallardo will happily churn out 490bhp from its 5-litre V10 engine, which steadily grew to a healthy 510bhp. And thanks to its sensational sleek design, four-wheel-drive system and mid-engine layout, the Gallardo is one of the finest supercars in the world. But Lamborghini wanted more – it wanted a harder, faster and more capable version of the Gallardo to compete with the Ferrari F430 Scuderia. Enter the Superleggera. Lamborghini’s engineers took one standard Gallardo and stripped it of a massive 70kg, using carbon fibre wherever they could, even making the wheel nuts from titanium instead of steel. Lambo set to work on the exhaust system, tweaked the intake and remapped car’s electronic overlord. The result? A massive 530bhp. Want to see a modified Lamborghini with PINK brakes? And the performance on offer was spectacular: 0-62mph took just 3.8 seconds, 0-200km/h (124mph) took 12.5 seconds, and the Superleggera would smash the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 196mph.
