The new series of Top Gear hits week two, with hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond and The Stig all caught up in more tyre-shredding sideways action.

Vijay Pattni rounds up the cars from episode two – including the stunning Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, the Subaru WRX STi and the 572bhp Audi RS6 estate.

The second episode of Top Gear saw Jeremy Clarkson road test the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X and the Subaru WRX STi, Richard Hammond took on two super-skiers in an Audi RS6,

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

Jeremy took to the Top Gear test track in the hottest version of the Japanese rally legend – the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

Jezza drove the hot 360bhp – but concluded the slightly less powerful 300bhp version – equivalent to the Impreza – would make the more ‘sensible’ choice.

And powersliding around the stationary Subaru on the track, Jeremy summarised: “There is no car which handles like this one… it will literally run rings around the Subaru.”

Subaru Impreza WRX STi

The new Subaru Impreza WRX STi packs a turbocharged 2.5-litre boxer engine producing 294bhp, which means it can sprint from 0-60mph in just 4.8 seconds – but those figures didn’t impress Jeremy, who complained the new ‘Scooby’ was too soft in comparison to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

“It’s got less equipment than an Egyptian’s lavatory.”

Audi RS6 Avant

Richard Hammond kickstarted the first of new Top Gear’s ambitious races in the mighty 572bhp Audi RS6 Avant, racing against two skiers in the French Alps.

Hammond confusingly instructed the Frenchmen to “Hit the ham!”, before hitting the twisty alpine roads. He lost – but loved the Audi RS6, declaring it better than a BMW M5 estate.

Mercedes-Benz CLK AMG ‘Black Series’

Jeremy Clarkson wanted to put a little excitement back into his drive – and road-tested the hot Mercedes CLK AMG ‘Black Series’.

Piloting the monster Merc onto deserted Welsh roads, Jeremy read out Mercedes’ warning letter to buyers, before unleashing the full power of the 6.2-litre AMG-tuned V8 powerhouse.

“It’s not dangerous”, Jeremy concluded. “It’s just incredibly good fun.”

1991 MG Maestro

Top Gear’s newest recruit – Top Gear Stuntman – was set his next challenge: to barrel-roll through the air recreating the famous stunt from 007 adventure The Man With The Golden Gun.

James May took his time working out the complicated arithmetic to ensure Top Gear Stuntman would land on all four wheels – but got it wrong, and watched on as the hapless driver pounded through the air and crashed to a halt.

“That didn’t work”, concluded James, while Jeremy invited the crowd to complete the famous Top Gear slogan.

“That was ambitious… but rubbish”, Jeremy declared.
