Know your car’s servicing schedule and make sure the service book is stamped

31 July 2008

Keeping your car regularly serviced will make fuel last longer.

We show you how a car service can prevent a ten per cent drop in fuel economy.

Carrying out a regular service is essential to keep your car in shape – and your engine performing efficiently.

Under-serviced engines could cost you £100 more on fuel each year.

Where should I get my car serviced?

There are plenty of ways to get your car serviced, whether it’s visiting a local garage or booking a check-up with your car’s manufacturer – so shop around.

If you use an independent garage, ensure it’s VAT-registered and the mechanics use genuine parts for your car. If they use patent parts they should let you know. Check the part serial numbers to make sure.

In October 2002, new regulations allowed non-franchised garages to service cars. That means repair work carried out by an approved independent garage will not void your warranty, as long as it’s serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

How often should I get my car serviced?

You should aim to service your car at least once a year – or in accordance with your car manufacturer’s guidelines.

Know your car’s servicing schedule and make sure the service book is stamped.

What checks can I do myself?

There are a few quick and easy steps you can take to increase your fuel economy by up to ten per cent:

• Check your tyre pressure – save almost £100 per year
• Check your oil level – avoid being hit by a £1,400 repair bill

Save more money on car repairs – buy used car parts and be kind to the environment.
