11 July 2008

You can save money on fuel by making your car lighter – so your money goes further.

We show you which items you can remove to lighten your car’s load.

The lighter your car, the less effort is needed to accelerate. So clear any junk from your boot and avoid carrying unnecessary weight.

Remove your roof rack – it can increase fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent (if you don’t know how to remove it, get a professional to help).

Ensure your car isn’t filled with items which you could leave at home, for example:

• CDs
• Any unnecessary items in the glove box
• Tool boxes
• Empty bottles
• Old maps
• Suitcases and bags

These all contribute to your car’s total weight which can put extra strain on your engine – and cost you more money.

Any heavy modifications such as spoilers and body kits can also increase the speed at which your car burns fuel.
