Arrange to share a car with friends or relatives when you travel to frequent destinations

30 July 2008

Join a car sharing – or liftsharing – scheme and get as many people in one car as possible, to share the fuel costs.

We show you where to find your nearest car sharing scheme.

Car sharing schemes allow you to combine journeys with other passengers, reducing congestion and saving fuel.

There are two ways to begin car sharing:

Make your own scheme

Arrange to share a car with friends or relatives when you travel to frequent destinations, which may include:

• Schools
• Supermarkets
• Gyms
• Your place of work
• Evenings out

Join an existing scheme

There are a number of larger organisations which help find people in your area who make similar trips to you.

Visit carshare.com for a list of UK car sharing schemes by location which lists UK car sharing schemes by location.

Alternatively the Liftshare network is a national car sharing scheme with over 200,000 registered members.

Drive with at least one other person and your car becomes eligible for a car-sharing lane.

There are currently two in operation – one lane links the M606 in West Yorkshire with Junction 26 of the M62, and the other runs on the M1 between St Albans and Luton from Junction 7 to 10.
