Save money on repair bills by checking your car before booking it in for an MOT

02 September 2008

MOTs and car repairs are a necessary expense – but needn’t be costly.

We show you what to check before an MOT and how to get your next one for half-price.

Cars registered more than three years ago will have to undergo an MOT each year – a series of checks which ensures the car is roadworthy.

What’s checked at an MOT?

• Steering and suspension
• Lights and mirrors
• Number plate
• Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
• Windscreen, wipers and washers
• Seats and seatbelts
• Fuel and exhaust system, including emissions
• Doors and vehicle structure
• Wheels, tyres and brakes
• Horn

How to avoid failing an MOT

If your car fails its MOT it will need extra work.

Save money on repair bills by checking your car before booking it in for an MOT.

1. Check your tyre pressure and tread depth, wheels and brakes. Test the handbrake by pulling it on and trying to drive off gently. If it fails to hold the car back, it will need attention.
2. Check all lights work and mirrors are visible.
3. Test all doors, seats and seatbelts are operating correctly.
4. Check the windscreen isn’t cracked – it should be fully visible. Fill up your washer level and make sure the wipers work too.
5. Test the horn.
