Check traffic reports and consider alternative routes to save money on fuel

12 September 2008

Saving money on fuel is as simple as checking your route.

We show you which types of road to avoid and how to beat the traffic.

1. Plan your route

Look for the easiest and shortest routes before setting off. A quick map check could save you money on fuel if you’re reaching the destination in half the time.

Consider alternative routes for regular journeys – is there a shortcut or easier route you may have missed?

2. Avoid certain roads

The following road surfaces can increase your car’s fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent:

• Gravel
• Dirt
• Rough roads
• Mud

Avoid built-up areas with junctions and speed bumps where possible – regularly changing speed in low gears is an inefficient way to drive.

3. Beat the traffic

Check traffic reports before you start your journey. The Highways Agency is a good source of up-to-date information

If you have a digital radio (DAB), press the ‘scan’ button and select ‘Traffic Radio.’

4. Use a sat-nav

Cut long journey times and make fuel last longer by investing in a sat-nav.

Sat-navs can help you re-route quickly and easily, but can be expensive.

Visit Auto Trader’s Car Parts and Accessories page and find the right sat nav for you.

Cheaper alternatives include:

• Road maps
• The ‘Think Ahead Move Ahead’ guide from the Highways Agency. Get a free copy by calling 08457 504030 or printing the online document.
