Driving with under-inflated tyres can reduce your fuel economy by up to ten per cent.

Check the pressure in your tyres at least once a week, and before every long journey. If the pressure seems low, check it immediately with a tyre gauge.

1. Unscrew the tyre valve cap – these are usually black and twist off by hand.
2. Insert the gauge into the valve and check the pressure on the gauge display. If it’s above or below the recommended pressure, it needs adjusting.
3. Use an electric tyre pump to fill to the correct level. These can be found at most petrol stations and garages.
