London’s Canary Wharf throws open its doors to some of the world’s hottest cars next week at the 2008 Motorexpo.

Vijay Pattni rounds up the show stopping cars vying for your attention at the free-to-visit motor show in London's Canary Wharf.

Alfa Romeo

The best of British and the best of Italian – Alfa will showcase its all-new Alfa Romeo Brera S at the 2008 London Motorexpo.

The Alfa Romeo Brera S is the Italian carmakers hot new model, built in collaboration with UK motorsport gurus Prodrive.

The Brera S features suspension specially tuned for UK roads and special-order 19-inch lightweight wheels inspired by the Alfa 8C supercar.

Alfa is also bringing along the super-smooth Alfa Romeo 159 saloon, and the gorgeous Alfa Romeo Spider.

Aston Martin

James Bond’s company car will make its first official UK show debut on the marble floor at One Canada Square at the 2008 Motorexpo.

The Aston Martin DBS – which Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson described as a “harder Aston Martin DB9” – gets a full-fat 6-litre V12 engine producing 510bhp and 420lb/ft of pulling power.

This means the DBS, officially made by the UK’s coolest company, can sprint from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds and hits 100mph in 9.4 seconds – making it the fastest Aston ever.

Aston Martin is also showcasing the DB9 Volante (convertible) and the V8 Vantage Roadster.

BMW

The new BMW X6 uses the power of four; it’s got four-wheel-drive, a brand-new 400bhp twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine, and space for four inside.

The groundbreaking new BMW X6 crosses SUV size and practicality with coupe-looks and saloon-car handling. Auto Trader Web Editor Adrian Higgins test drove the BMW X6 and said: “With stunning looks and superb driving capability [the BMW X6] is a stunning package.”

Sitting alongside the V8 behemoth at BMW’s Motorexpo stand will be the BMW 135i Coupe – which many believe is the spiritual successor to the original BMW M3 – and the ‘tax-busting’ BMW 118d.

Breckland

The sexy Breckland Beira is the hottest new British sportscar, handbuilt in Norfolk with the same 6-litre V8 engine onboard as used in the Vauxhall VXR8.

This means the stunning new Breckland Beira – which made its shock debut earlier this week ahead of its Motorexpo launch – can sprint from 0-62mph in less than five seconds and hit a top speed of 155mph.

Breckland director Mike Rawlings described the Breckland Beira as “the ultimate in affordable boy’s toys”.

Corvette

One of the most iconic US badges, Chevrolet has shipped over a dose of American muscle with the range-topping Corvette Z06 and hot C6 sportscars.

The revamped Corvette C6 uses a 6.2-litre V8 engine producing 431bhp and 424lb/ft of pulling power.

This monstrous power output combined with lightweight body panels means the Corvette C6 can sprint from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 186mph.

But if you’re after something with a little more muscle, Chevrolet are also displaying the hot Corvette Z06 which uses a 7-litre V8 to produce 505bhp.

 

Jaguar

The British marque – recently bought by Indian company Tata motors – is showcasing its full range at the 2008 London Motorexpo.

This means the stunning new Jaguar XF will make an appearance, alongside the new X-Type, luxury Jaguar XJ, and the Jaguar XK coupe.

The new Jaguar XF features a range of engines including a twin-turbocharged 2.7-litre diesel, and the range-topping supercharged 4.2-litre V8 model producing 420bhp.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes is keen to show off its new facelifted range, including the award-winning Mercedes CLS, and the super-smooth Mercedes-Benz SL.

The mould-breaking Mercedes-Benz CLS saloon – which features a rakish coupe roofline and executive-saloon practicality – will be offered with a 3.2-litre diesel unit.

This likely best-seller will offer up a sub-seven second 0-62mph time while still returning an average of 37mpg on the combined cycle.

Mini

BMW’s best-selling take on the humble Mini will make its debut at the London Motorexpo.

The Mini stand at Canada Square Park will showcase the full range of Minis, including the hot Mini Cooper S.

And ‘The Other Mini’ will also make a debut – the striking new Mini Clubman.

Porsche

Porsche celebrates its 60th year of sportscar production on June 8 this year – and the Stuttgart-based carmaker is displaying its finest at the London Motorexpo.

Making an appearance is the new Porsche Cayenne GTS, which features a 4.8-litre V8 engine churning out 405bhp, propelling the giant SUV from 0-62mph in just 6.1 seconds.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen has rolled out its hottest SUV ever at the London Motorexpo – the blistering Volkswagen Touraeg R50.

The R50 makes its first public appearance at the Motorexpo – but this is no shrinking violet. The R50 features a 5-litre V10 turbodiesel engine which produces 345bhp.

And coupled to this is a whopping 627lb/ft of pulling power, which is claimed to be “more than enough to pull a Boeing 747 passenger aircraft” – making it one of the world’s most powerful production diesels.
